Acropora. I generally don't ID my Acros but prefer the captive-lineage information and name.

Please note, all species ID's are purely guesswork and not meant as definitive.

I've stocked my tank primarily with frags from other reefkeepers and vendors - and while it's been a long time growing some out to where I'd like, it's given me a chance to master the chemistry and husbandry to make them really look their best.

I have many people to thank for my success with Acropora, from my local and state reef clubs to a huge number of people online who have guided me to the success I've found. I couldn't have gotten where I have without it.

Wild corals/ocean aquacultured Acropora marked next to name, captive corals source info to be included within description, when page complete. I've taken to numbering my Acropora, as it keeps them straight and gives a general clue as to their age in my aquaria.

Good lord, going through all my corals/frags to number them ... I have way more varieties than I would have guessed. Hi, I'm Mark, I'm an Acroholic.

Pardon the mess.

Aqua w/ Blue Tip Acropora sp. - 1

I got this frag from Greg Hiller of Boston, July 1, 2003.
It's an Acropora with a personality, can be the star of the tank and can also be a very good `barometer' of the tank's overall nutrient level. When things are good, water's great ... it's just lovely, with it's body a light blue/aqua color. When there's nutrient problems, the polyps on the body go brown and the color fades ... the tips always seem to have wonderful color.

This coral taught me that moving Acropora means a longer waiting game. This coral, if moved, can take a month or two to start growing on it's branches ... and as is obvious from my tank progression - this got moved too much. Appears to sprout multiple branches from the `stub' left from cutting frags.

I've propagated this one a lot. While as the photo-progression shows it hasn't always looked great - since fall 2004 it's really taken off, grown to a nice colony and when the tank is doing well, a favorite.

Green Slimer - 2

Madison local, August, 2003.
From a couple of inches, it's grown into my largest Acropora. Lower right picture is from cutting frags in July, 2005 ... about two years of growth [minus 3 propagation episodes].

It's the green slimer. Grows appreciably, I watch this one for growth as it's almost a week by week status report on the Ca/Alk levels in my tank. If those are off, I don't see it grow - if they're on, a short inspection of the coral always yields some new branch forming.

A great first Acropora, easy to color, a coral I've enjoyed keeping.

Phishy Sapphire `Tort' - 12

Received March 2004.
It sure looks like what's being called Acropora hoeksmai.

This coral was inflicted with red bugs not long after I got it, and thus it's been slower than hoped in growth at first. Starting to branch a lot now, hopefully soon to look more like a nice colony and fill out. An easy to color coral, always looks quite good, I have big plans for this coral.
