Aqua w/ Blue Tip Acropora sp. - 1
I got this frag from Greg Hiller of Boston, July 1, 2003.
It's an Acropora with a personality, can be the star of the tank and
can also be a very good `barometer' of the tank's overall nutrient
level. When things are good, water's great ... it's just lovely, with
it's body a light blue/aqua color. When there's nutrient problems,
the polyps on the body go brown and the color fades ... the tips always
seem to have wonderful color.
This coral taught me that moving Acropora means a longer waiting
game. This coral, if moved, can take a month or two to start growing
on it's branches ... and as is obvious from my tank progression -
this got moved too much. Appears to sprout multiple branches from
the `stub' left from cutting frags.
I've propagated this one a lot. While as the photo-progression shows
it hasn't always looked great - since fall 2004 it's really taken
off, grown to a nice colony and when the tank is doing well, a favorite.
Green Slimer - 2
Madison local, August, 2003.
From a couple of inches, it's grown into my largest Acropora. Lower
right picture is from cutting frags in July, 2005 ... about two years
of growth [minus 3 propagation episodes].
It's the green slimer. Grows appreciably, I watch this one for growth
as it's almost a week by week status report on the Ca/Alk levels in
my tank. If those are off, I don't see it grow - if they're on, a
short inspection of the coral always yields some new branch forming.
A great first Acropora, easy to color, a coral I've enjoyed keeping.
